On the first instalment of Behind The Chapter, we sat down with Julina Chua, founder of Style It Simply, an events decor company fielded by a trio of entrepreneurs making waves in the field of events decoration.

From Party Planning to a Thriving Business

Seven years ago, Julina didn’t set out to start an events company—she was simply planning her 21st birthday party. Faced with costly decor setups, she rented what she could and bought the rest, leaving her with a collection of props she wasn’t sure what to do with.

Determined to reclaim her cost of setting up the party, she decided rent her items to folks who needed them for various types of events, from birthday parties to proposals. Realising that she was supplementing a market which was untapped, she began receiving orders off Singapore’s online market place Carousell to rent her props and items, leading her to purchase more goods to her inventory. Passionate in fuelling this market, she began to set up shop 6 months before Circuit Breaker in Singapore. Along with friends she had met from different points in time in her life, Style It Simply was born—built from passion, resourcefulness, and a keen eye for opportunity.

Pandemic woes, and post-pandemic rise

It’s not secret that the pandemic put the world almost at a standstill. Businesses bringing down their shutters, social events cancelled, lifestyles changed. Style It Simply felt the impact too, being unable to fulfil a large amount of orders sent in before the Circuit Breaker mandatory lockdown here in Singapore.

But instead of shutting down, Julina pivoted—focusing on smaller-scale events like home solemnisations and intimate weddings. Two years later, as restrictions eased, the business was back in full swing.

Bringing Transparency to Event Decor

One of the biggest challenges in the industry? Unclear pricing. Julina shared with us how customers have lamented about how prices of customised packages, rental, and items for sale tend to be priced only after enquiries. This has caused some potential customers to be afraid to inquire about rates, driving away potential leads that may be beneficial for the business.

Julina wanted to change that. On Style It Simply’s website, customers can browse setups and see transparent pricing, making it easy to plan and book without the back-and-forth. The brand stays true to its name—keeping things fuss-free, clear, and simple. Stye It Simply’s strength is in its name: it operates on a fuss-free, transparent, and simple system that allows her clientele to peruse, customise, and order in a few clicks. Although fielded by only three members, Julina’s commitment to addressing queries and concerns goes around the clock.

Word of Mouth & Community-Driven Growth

For Style It Simply, referrals are everything. Most clients discover them through recommendations, proving that trust and strong relationships drive the industry. Many even return for future events or ask Julina for contacts in event planning, wedding coordination, and more.
